Dentures

Complete and Partial Dentures

When you are missing most or all of your teeth, your ability to eat, speak, and interact normally becomes severely limited. Dentures have been a dental staple for centuries, and modern dentistry has helped them to become more useful and reliable than ever before.

Dr. Lalani of Rockaway Dental Group has helped Far Rockaway residents find new vitality in their smile with custom-fitted dentures and partials. Schedule a comprehensive consultation with our office today to determine if dentures are the right choice for you.

Types of Dentures

There are a variety of dentures available to patients, allowing them to find the best type for their individual needs.

Partial Dentures can be used when a person still has some healthy teeth. These can be crafted for the missing teeth and use the remaining teeth as anchor points to hold them in place.

Full Dentures replace an entire arch (the full row on the upper or lower jaw) of teeth. They are custom-fitted to the person’s mouth and held in place by suction or a dental adhesive paste.
Both partial and full dentures are removable and must be taken out to be cleaned. They may also need adjusting if jaw bone loss occurs.

Implant-Supported Dentures are a more permanent option for tooth replacement. A series of implants are rooted into the jaw, creating supports onto which the dentures can be attached. The implants fuse to the jaw bone and provide chewing pressure, preserving the jaw bone density.

As the dentures are fixed into place by implants, they do not need to be removed to be cleaned. Instead, these dentures can be maintained through brushing and flossing, just like natural teeth. They also feel more comfortable in the mouth, as they will not slip or be knocked out of place.

What Qualifies Me for Dentures?

Dentures are a great option for replacing missing teeth, but they may not be right for everyone. If you are missing only one or a few teeth, you may see better results from dental implants or a fixed bridge.

To qualify for dentures, you must be missing most or all teeth. If the remaining teeth are in poor condition, the dentist may discuss having them extracted to make room for full dentures.

Dentures require jawbone support to hold themselves in place, especially in the case of implant-supported dentures. Jawbone loss may occur in places where teeth have been missing for some time. This may mean that a bone grafting procedure must be done before dentures can be fitted.

The Denture Creation Process

First, Dr. Lalani will assess whether you are a candidate for dentures, and help you determine the best type. He will also determine if preparatory procedures, such as bone grafting, are necessary. He then uses digital imaging to create a model that can be used to design your custom-fit dentures, which are crafted by a dental lab.

If using implants, the dentist inserts them in preparation for the dentures. Once they have arrived and adjustments have been made, you can begin using your dentures immediately.
